James Wilburn Shepherd
1827 - 1899

James Wilburn Shepherd
James Wilburn Shepherd

James Wilburn Shepherd was born October 6, 1827 on Reddies River, Wilkes County, North Carolina as the fourth of eleven children of Larkin and Alley Irwin Shepherd. James Wilburn (spelled Welborn in some sources), better known as Wilburn Shepherd, was the grandfather of Grover and Harrison Shepherd.

Wilburn attended school in Wilkes County in District 43, receiving only a fuctional education in the "three R's." Seeking better economic opportunities, he came to Ashe County sometime before the 1850 Federal Census was taken, as he was living with his sister, Lucinda, wife of Nathan Weaver, when the census was taken.

Preceeding Wilburn into Ashe County was his brother, John F. Shepherd. John came to Ashe County around 1840 and settled in the Cranberry Community near Laurel Springs. It was in this area that most of the Ashe County Shepherds and their descendants lived.

Fathered a Child Before Marriage

Shortly after moving to Ashe, Wilburn apparently fathered a child by a lady named Sarah Perry, daughter of Ebanezer & Barbary Perry. The child was named Franklin. He was born June 20, 1851. Franklin lived with his maternal grandparents and went under the surname of Perry. Meanwhile, his mother married Alford Pike on April 9, 1853, and the marriage record lists "Jas. W. Shepherd" and his brother-in-law, Nathan Weaver, as witnesses. When Franklin reached adulthood, he began using the Shepherd surname, and went by Franklin Shepherd until his death on January 1, 1936. Franklin's death certificate lists his father as "Wilborn Shepherd", born in "Wilkes County, NC." [1]

Married Elizabeth Jones

Apparently, Wilburn maintained ties with relatives and others in the Cranberry area. On September 30, 1852, Wilburn married Elizabeth Jones (b. Dec. 27, 1827), the oldest child of Thomas Fielding and Jane Phipps Jones of the Scottsville/Cranberry communities. Elizabeth's ancestry includes some colorful characters from the Jones and Phipps families which will be explored in a later article.

On January 11, 1861, Wilburn and Elizabeth purchased 149 acres of land from Nathan Weaver and built a two-story log home on the North Fork of the New River in the Weaverford Community. The home was washed away in the great flood of 1940. Although Wilburn purchased additional properties on the North Fork, it would seem that his first homesite was the place where he lived the rest of his life.

Wilburn served with the Confederacy during the Civil War, as did his four brothers, John F., D. Franklin, Jordan Ashley, and Abraham. Early in the Reconstruction Period, a Masonic Lodge was established in Ashe County. Jefferson Lodge No. 219 was organized in 1866. J.W. Shepherd is among a list of members taken December 3, 1866.

On May 13, 1873, Wilburn was sworn in as the postmaster of the Weaversford Post Office near his home. He served as postmaster until 1881.

Had Six Children

Wilburn and Elizabeth reared six children, whose families are detailed below. Most of Wilburn Shepherd's children, and many of their descendants, made their homes near other Shepherd descendants in the area along the county lines of Ashe and Alleghany. This area included the communities of Piney Creek, Furches, Scottsville, Cranberry, and Laurel Springs. John Calvin Shepherd, the oldest son of Wilburn and Elizabeth, was the exception. John Calvin reared his family near Crumpler, a short distance down the road from Weaversford.

Elizabeth died December 22, 1877 and is buried beside her father in the Cranberry Community Cemetery in Laurel Springs, N.C.

Two years later, on August 17, 1879, Wilburn married Sarah Ellen LaRue (born January, 1851), who may have been a teacher at Oak Hill Academy in nearby Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Although J.W. and Ellen had no children, Wilburn mentions, in his Last Will and Testament, a girl named LuLu Sullen that the couple raised as Lola Shepherd. Wilburn also mentions a Wiley "Dick" Phillips in his will. Wiley F. Phillips is also listed in the 1900 Ashe Co., NC census with a birth date of February, 1888, which matches the birth date of Wiley Franklin "Dick" Shepherd, son of James Franklin Shepherd and Reena Phillips, who was born February 6, 1888.

Wilburn departed this life on April 28, 1899 and is buried on a hill overlooking his homeplace on Weaversford. Ellen's brother, Charles J. LaRhue, and nieces Minnie A. and Zella LaRhue, were living with her in 1900. Ellen died September 1, 1916.

As Remembered by Granddaughter Dolly Shepherd Perry

The biggest thing I can remember about Grandpaw Shepherd was we lived over here in Whitetop and he lived, oh, it was a long ways and he always come to the store out there at Whitetop. Me and Lenny was little bitty fellars and when we seen him a-goin' to the store, we knowed we had our candy. What he'd do when he come back from the store, he'd have a little brown paper bag full of this peppermint pillar, we called it, candy. And he'd bring it and give it to me and Lenny. Well, we got to fightin' over the candy, so Grandpaw said, "Well, okay, I'll fix that the next time I go to the store." Well, we thought, oh, no, our candy's gone, we won't get no more. So the next time Grandpaw come, we watched for him to come back and instead of having one little bag, he had two little bags. He had 'em to put the candy in two little bags and they wasn't no fussin'. I can't remember just how he looked. I know he was a big, tall man and he had a real big old mustache and he wore big old hats and he had big old feet. That's the main thing I can remember about my grandpaw. [2]

    Mary Matilda Shepherd
Identity uncertain, but believed to be Mary Matilda Shepherd

  4. Mary Matilda Shepherd, born March 16, 1859; died before 1870. Mary is believed to be buried beside her father on a hill overlooking the old James Wilburn Shepherd homeplace.

  5. James Franklin Shepherd (alias James Jones), born Oct. 5, 1860; died after 1944, probably in San Bernadino Co., California. Frank alledgedly shot a man to death. It is unclear whether or not Frank was actually convicted of the crime. Family tradition says that Frank escaped jail/prison by tying bed sheets together and lowering himself down out of a window. Frank then hid out with relatives at the John Calvin Shepherd homeplace, where he would hide beneath a staircase if someone was visiting the home.

Frank fled West and went by the alias of James Jones (the surname of his mother). He was also known by his NC cousins as "Uncle Frank". Exactly when this all occured is not known, but suspected to be sometime in the 1890's. Frank is not found in the 1900 Ashe County, NC census or thereafter. A deed from Frank to his brother, John Calvin Shepherd, was notorized in Sweet Grass County, Montana in July, 1902. Frank sold his brother a tract of land on the North Fork of the New River that was willed to him by his father, J.W. Shepherd, and also his one-fifth interest in his step-mother's dowry estate. Perhaps this coincides with Frank's new outlaw status, and he sold off his real estate interests in Ashe County, NC to get money in order to establish a new identity and life elsewhere.

    James Jones Family
John Calvin Shepherd visiting his brother James Franklin Shepherd's (alias James Jones) home near Los Angeles, CA about 1915. James is the taller man on the right. The woman beside him is believed to be his wife, and three of their children.

One family source says that Frank shot a man, but it was an accident. Another family source says that someone else confessed to the crime on their death bed. Frank is believed to have settled for a while in Oklahoma, and perhaps remarried while there. He later went on to California and made his home near Los Angeles in San Bernadino Co., CA.

Frank and wife, Reena, had at least one child, Wiley Franklin "Dick" Shepherd. Wiley went by the surname of Phillips as a child, but was known as a Shepherd as an adult. There is speculation that some family members believed Frank's brother, John Calvin Shepherd, was actually Wiley's father, but this is unsubstanciated, and may have resulted from Wiley's close association with the John Calvin Shepherd family after his father went west.

After Frank fled West, Reena remarried three times. She married a Mr. Hawkins, then married a Mr. Odom, and then married a Mr. Bowman. Reena had a daughter by Mr. Hawkins, named Myrtle. Myrtle and her husband Charlie Williams later raised Daniel Shepherd, the fifth child of her half-brother, Dick Shepherd.

As James Jones, Frank wrote to his North Carolina cousins several times. One of these letters has survived and is datelined: "Colton, Calif, R 1 Box 466, Feb 4-44". In this letter, James Jones speaks fondly of a person named Ralph Jones who is in the army, and has just been sent "across the water." It is believed that Ralph Jones was a son of James Jones. A photo taken when John Calvin Shepherd visited his brother near Los Angeles, Californa shows James Jones with a woman, who is believed to be his second wife, and their three children. These children have not yet been identified. However, it is suspected that the small boy in the photo may be Ralph Jones.

One known child of James Franklin Shepherd before heading West:

    • Wiley Franklin (Dick) Shepherd, born Feb. 6, 1888; died Feb. 18, 1965; married 1st Annie Taylor (b. ca. 1892, daughter of Bill & Martha Taylor), June 14, 1910 in Crumpler, NC; married 2nd Della Mae Christian (daughter of Robert & Martha Bishop Christian), Aug. 20, 1920 in Bristol, TN; Della died Sept. 5, 1931 shortly after giving birth to the couple's fifth child, Daniel; married 3rd Laura Mae Gaultney (b. Dec. 27, 1896; d. June 26, 1964 - daughter of Meredith & Nancy Adaline Ayers Gaultney), May 7, 1932; Wiley F. and Laura are buried at the Scottsville Baptist Church Cemetery in Scottsville, NC.

Dick enlisted in the US 6th Cavalry, Troop C on June 14, 1911. He served three years and was honorably discharged on June 13, 1914. On June 15, 1914, Dick entered the Marine Corps and served overseas in WWI. He took part in five major battles and was wounded by shrapnel shell, gased and shell shocked. On August 19, 1919, he was honorably discharged. Dick made a profession of faith in Christ and united with the Woodlawn Baptist Church in Bristol, TN in 1925. He became an active member in this church and served as a deacon. Around the 1930's the Dick Shepherd family lived in a rental house on the Dale Blevins Road in Grassy Creek, NC.

Around 1935 the family moved to Furches, NC where they lived in a log cabin on land owned by Dick's aunt & uncle, Willie and Sara Jane Shepherd Nuckolls. The Dick Shepherd family was an upstanding family in the community. Dick was a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, choir leader and church treasurer of Scottsville Baptist Church. He was also one of the first in the community to own a car and helped transport his neighbors when needed. He later worked at the Cherry Point Naval Base on the North Carolina coast. Around the late 1950's, Dick Shepherd built a new home for his family on Huckleberry Ridge Road in Crumpler, NC.
