The following map shows communities located along the county lines of Ashe and Alleghany, North Carolina which are east of the South Fork of the New River. The John Calvin Shepherd family and descendents made their homes west of the South Fork of the New River, while most of the children and grandchildren of James Wilburn Shepherd settled in communites on the east side of the river, which include Piney Creek, Scottsville, Furches, Cranberry, and Laurel Springs. Among others, the surnames of these descendants are: Shepherd, Nuckolls, Mabe, Phouts, Johnson, and Dancy. The Cranberry and Laurel Springs area was also the home of John F. Shepherd (brother to James Wilburn Shepherd) and many of his descendants.
