Wayne Dale Shepherd, age 84, a resident of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community and formerly of West Jefferson, died Thursday morning, Feb. 12.
Mr. Shepherd was born in Ashe County, Dec. 16, 1919, a son of Benjamin Harrison Shepherd and Sibbie Neaves Shepherd, and had been a resident of Ashe County most of his life. He had served as a master sergeant while stationed at Fort Bragg during World War II. For 34 years, he owned and operated Ashe County Auto Parts, and operated the North Carolina License Plate Agency in West Jefferson for 41 years. He was a member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions. He also served as North Wilkesboro District Lay Leader for several years and was a lay speaker at many churches in Ashe County. He was a member and past-president of the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce and a member and past-president of the Jeffersons Rotary Club. On Feb. 12, 1944, he was married to Ruth Eugenia Kimball, who died Sept. 25, 1989.
Surviving are a daughter, Jeanne Turnmire and her husband, Tracy of Lynchburg, Va.; two sons, Rev. Ben Shepherd and his wife, Alice of thomasville and Tom Shepherd and his wife, Donna of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Treva Kimball of Winston-Salem; nine loving grandchildren, Brad Turnmire and his wife, Courtney, Dana Turnmire, Laura Turnmire, Kevin Turnmire, Megan Turnmire, Stephen Shepherd, Jennifer Shepherd, Caron Shepherd and Ben Shepherd; two greatgrandchildren, Brittani Turnmire and Gavin Turnmire. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville on Friday from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the Fellowship Hall of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community by the Rev. Douglas Suggs. The family received friends immediately following the service. Mr. Shepherd remained at the funeral home until he was taken to the West Jefferson United Methodist Church in West Jefferson, where the family received friends from 1-2 p.m. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. at the church with burial following in the West Jefferson City Cemetery.
