The homeplace of Asa Shepherd, located on land once owned by his great grandfather Stephen Shepherd along Hwy. 76 in Russell County, KY. |
Stephen Shepherd was born Sept. 20, 1769 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia as the sixth child of John Sr. and Sarah Jennings Shepherd.
About 1775, John Shepherd, Sr. moved his family to the Reddies River area of Wilkes County, North Carolina, where Stephen and his siblings were raised. Stephen married Mary "Sally Ann" Robertson (b. Feb. 14, 1771), about 1795.
Stephen was an early pioneer of the Adair/Russell Counties area of Kentucky, following his brothers Andrew and Lewis into this new frontier about 1811. Stephen bought land in the Goose Creek section of Adair County which latter became part of Russell County. The Stephen Shepherd family lived in the vicinity of Webbs Crossroads, about three miles northwest of Russell Springs, Kentucky.
Between 1826 and 1838, eight of Stephen's nine children removed to Missouri - six of them settling in Pike County, MO. Son James remained in Russell County, and many of his descendants still live there today. Stephen died Oct. 1, 1825 and is buried in the Webb Cemetery, Russell County, Kentucky.

by brothers Elza Creal Shepherd & Doctor Gaither Shepherd September 7, 1862 - Shelbyville, TN Dear cousins: I take this opportunity to write you a few lines, which leaves me well at this time, and hope when these few lines comes to hand they may find you all enjoying the same blessing. Received your kind letter dated the 30th. It was great pleasure to hear from you and to hear that you all was well. We was sorrow to hear of grand-father being sick, though I hope he be restored to health again. I'm enjoying as good health as I ever did in my life. I weighed yesterday 159 pounds. Gaither is very __?__ and has been for about two weeks though I think he's getting a little better, he seems to be better to-day than common, he's so he can set up and write this letter for me. Walton Smith has also been very poorly. I will now tell you something of the big fight that has been fought lately at Richmond, the fight lasted for six days without intermission. The loss on our side in killed and wounded and missing is said to be twenty thousand and that of the rebels twenty thousand. The report gave that our men has taken Richmond though I don't know whether the report is reliable or not. The people of this country expresses a gret Union Sentiment. They made two Barbacues for our Regiment the 4th of July, one in Shelbyville and one at Richmond, a town about ten miles from her, our regiment mostly went to Richmond, I also went there and I saw some of the finest looking girls that I ever saw an they treated us soldiers with a great deal of respect, they all express a respect for Kentucky boys. A few lines to Bob, Bob I wish I was at home to go with you to Mr. Raberns. I think the time is not far distant when I will be permitted to return home in peace and we then will have a fine time with the girls. Bob I swapped horses until I got one of the finest horses in regiment. So I don't know of anything more to write that would interest you. Tell your father, mother and all the kinsfolk to be sure to write, so no more at present, I remain your cousin and friend, E C. Shepherd. To all the family: I also send my best wishes and respect to you all. I close by saying I'm your cousin and friend. D.G Shepherd. Submitted by Morris Shepherd |
